Browntail Moth in Bangor: What You’re Up Against

Browntail moth has been a documented problem in Bangor for years. The Fairmount neighborhood is a known local hotspot, and Bangor Public Works targets city trees each spring. It’s an invasive species, and while populations dropped sharply from their 2022 peak, the Maine Forest Service has been clear: browntail moth will remain present in Maine, and population increases are expected again.

The caterpillars feed on hardwood trees including oak, apple, crabapple, cherry, and birch, causing defoliation that can stress or weaken trees over multiple seasons. The more immediate concern for most homeowners is the toxic hairs. Microscopic barbed hairs cause a skin rash similar to poison ivy and can trigger respiratory irritation. According to the Maine CDC, shed hairs can stay toxic in the environment for up to three years, making properties uncomfortable long after caterpillar season ends.

The Maine Forest Service recommends hiring a licensed pesticide applicator for browntail moth treatment and advises that treatment be completed before late May to be effective for the current season.

How We Treat Browntail Moth

Our approach follows integrated pest management (IPM) principles, targeting the pest where it’s active rather than defaulting to repeated broad-spectrum applications. At the property level, we treat caterpillars directly to reduce the hair hazard and limit feeding damage. For susceptible trees, we offer tree trunk injection using the QUIK-jet AIR system, which delivers insecticide directly into the tree’s vascular system. Injection sites are sealed immediately with Arborplugs to help prevent secondary infection. After treatment, we can follow up with deep-root fertilizing to help the tree recover from defoliation stress.

Browntail Moth Life Cycle & Treatment Timing

Timing matters more with browntail moth than with most pests. Caterpillars have two active periods each year, and the window for effective treatment is narrow. Knowing the calendar helps you act before the opportunity closes.

Spring Activity

Caterpillars emerge from their winter webs in mid-April and feed actively through June. This is the primary treatment window. Pesticide applications are most effective before late May; treatments applied after that point don’t meaningfully reduce hair exposure or tree damage for the current season. You can identify browntail moth caterpillars by two orange dots near their tail end.

Fall Activity & Winter Webs

A second generation hatches in August and stays active through early October, when caterpillars spin the white silken winter webs visible in tree branches. Web clipping is a non-chemical management option. Webs can be removed and destroyed any time between October and mid-April. After mid-April, caterpillars have already emerged and the webs are empty, so clipping no longer helps.

Adult Moths & Egg-Laying

Adult browntail moths emerge in early July. They have white wings with a brown abdomen and are drawn to outdoor lights. Turning off non-essential exterior lights at night from early July through early August can reduce the number of moths laying eggs in nearby trees. Host trees most vulnerable to feeding damage include oak, apple, crabapple, cherry, birch, shadbush, and rose bushes.

Tree injection timing depends on the product used, tree species, and where the tree is in its seasonal development. Working with a licensed applicator allows treatment to be scheduled when conditions support the best outcome.
