Moth Control in Bangor, ME

Browntail Moth Treatment for Your Property & Trees

Browntail moth is one of the few pests in Maine that damages your trees and makes your yard a significant concern at the same time. At Proactive Pest, we handle both sides of that problem. We’ve been serving Bangor and the surrounding area since 2000, and our combination of licensed pest treatment and tree care means you don’t need to coordinate two separate companies to protect your property.

We work with residential and commercial clients across Penobscot and Hancock Counties, including Brewer, Hampden, Orono, Old Town, and the Greater Bangor area. Free estimates are available for browntail moth control.

Browntail Moth in Bangor: What You’re Up Against

Browntail moth has been a documented problem in Bangor for years. The Fairmount neighborhood is a known local hotspot, and Bangor Public Works targets city trees each spring. It’s an invasive species, and while populations dropped sharply from their 2022 peak, the Maine Forest Service has been clear: browntail moth will remain present in Maine, and population increases are expected again.

The caterpillars feed on hardwood trees including oak, apple, crabapple, cherry, and birch, causing defoliation that can stress or weaken trees over multiple seasons. The more immediate concern for most homeowners is the toxic hairs. Microscopic barbed hairs cause a skin rash similar to poison ivy and can trigger respiratory irritation. According to the Maine CDC, shed hairs can stay toxic in the environment for up to three years, making properties uncomfortable long after caterpillar season ends.

The Maine Forest Service recommends hiring a licensed pesticide applicator for browntail moth treatment and advises that treatment be completed before late May to be effective for the current season.

How We Treat Browntail Moth

Our approach follows integrated pest management (IPM) principles, targeting the pest where it’s active rather than defaulting to repeated broad-spectrum applications. At the property level, we treat caterpillars directly to reduce the hair hazard and limit feeding damage. For susceptible trees, we offer tree trunk injection using the QUIK-jet AIR system, which delivers insecticide directly into the tree’s vascular system. Injection sites are sealed immediately with Arborplugs to help prevent secondary infection. After treatment, we can follow up with deep-root fertilizing to help the tree recover from defoliation stress.

Why Bangor Property Owners Choose Proactive Pest

Most pest control companies don’t touch trees, and most tree services don’t handle pest treatment. That gap forces property owners to manage two separate contractors and coordinate separate schedules. We’ve been doing both since 2000, so one call can cover the full scope of the browntail moth problem.

We’re locally owned and based in Bangor, not a regional franchise. We know which neighborhoods see the heaviest caterpillar pressure each spring, and we schedule treatments to fall within the effective window the Maine Forest Service identifies. That local knowledge supports treatment timing based on Maine conditions.

Our customers consistently mention fast response times, dependable follow-through, and seeing the same technician on return visits. That consistency matters when you’re dealing with a pest that requires precise timing to treat effectively.

We serve residential and commercial properties throughout Penobscot and Hancock Counties, including Brewer, Hampden, Orono, Old Town, and surrounding communities.

Get a Free Browntail Moth Estimate Before the Season Peaks

Effective browntail moth caterpillar treatment needs to happen before late May. Once that window closes, treatment may not meaningfully reduce hair exposure or protect your trees for the current season. Scheduling early gives us time to assess your property and get treatment in place while it can still make a difference.

Proactive Pest offers free estimates for moth control in Bangor and across Penobscot and Hancock Counties. We work with residential and commercial properties alike, covering everything from property-level treatment to tree injection.
